Continuing the Awareness

I had the incredible opportunity to meet Aaron Ulster, author and Holocaust Survivor, and listen to conversation with Elie Wiesel, a man whom I have personally adored since I was about 12 years old, who is a well-known author, Humanitarian, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, and outstanding outspoken civilian, as well as being a Holocaust Survivor. I held the hands of three survivors of the Rwandan genocide we often date to 1994, one of whom spoke almost no English, yet understood the language of compassion and outreach. I was in Chicago, listening to Elie Wiesel's words regarding the humanitarian efforts made to save Darfur to ensure that other atrocities will not be forgotten, and even more so - these atrocities will not be repeated in remembering them as such. My passion for the aid we can provide towards theses atrocities was invigorated and renewed. I agree with Mr. Wiesel in saying that awareness and literature are certainties to ensure that these events will not be forgotten. However, awareness and literature should compel action to ensure that history will not repeat its mistakes.

I have recently viewed previews for the upcoming movie to be released on November 2, 2007, starring Don Cheadle and George Clooney, well known actors who are using their media attention for the betterment of the world. DARFUR NOW is the title of the movie that I will be encouraging others to view on the opening day, and each day thereafter. Please encourage your friends who are aware of the crisis in Sudan, as well as those of your friends whom you will suspect their boredom at the viewing of such a movie, to go and learn about what others are doing to provide awareness and aid, as well as to learn what each of us can do to help the millions of people being displaced.

I will be posting articles and essays on a much more regular basis providing information about the genocide in Darfur and the activities taking place to provide humanitarian aid towards that crisis, as well as about other atrocities around the world. As always, the links we will have placed on this site, we attempt to keep clear of any political or religious ties. Humanitarian efforts, I believe, should be strictly made to help other, without underlying agendas (as Mr. George Clooney will point out as a detriment to the efforts to help the Sudanese in Darfur). As always, we appreciate comments, concerns, questions, or requests; please do not hesitate to email us at: rockfordawarenessgroup@gmail.com.
